Legal Coffee Talk: Understanding Statelessness
Stateless people are often referred to as ‘citizens of nowhere’ as no state recognizes them as their own. Currently 218,000 stateless people live in the US where there is no legal framework to address their unique and complex needs. As a result, stateless people in the US face identity, housing, and employment barriers, along with decades of family separation and are often subject to repeated and prolonged detention. United Stateless (USL) was founded in 2018 by seven stateless individuals and allies as the only organization in the US dedicated to ending statelessness in the US. They are a national stateless-led organization with a mission to build community among those affected by statelessness and advocate for their human right to a nationality. Join HIAS’s Pro Bono and Partnerships team and United Stateless on for a presentation and conversation on the causes of statelessness, the obstacles faced by stateless people, the advocacy strategy to end statelessness, and what the immigrant legal community can do to close the education and representation gap.
